At around four in the morning, an accident severely affected the Danish Red Cross, which was working alongside us at that time. A convoy heading to Denmark with Danish buses carrying prisoners from Neuengamme encountered an air raid alarm while passing through Lübeck. Because departure from the city had to be expedited and blackout conditions were complete, the convoy became scattered. Two of the buses took the route toward Neumünster, while the rest continued toward Kiel.
Everything went well until the two buses heading toward Neumünster reached the entrance to Segeberg. To pass a roadblock that had been set up in the dark, the driver briefly turned on the parking lights. This was spotted by a low-flying aircraft above, which instantly and without warning fired a burst of bullets across the road, hitting the bus and its fuel tank. Since the bullets were explosive, the effect of the shooting was devastating. Two people were killed and nine more were injured to varying degrees.
