Liquor and cigarettes

We arrived at our depot in Belzig and ate at 5 o’clock. Then the vehicles went in different directions. I traveled with a Danish bus and ambulance convoy to various camps, including Königswartha, Cottbus, and Bautzen near the Russian border. The Russians were only a few kilometers away. The rattle of machine-gun fire could be heard. It was unclear whether the Russians or the Germans controlled the town and surrounding areas. It was difficult to locate the prisoners we were supposed to collect. We bribed the guards with cigarettes and spirits. A liter of strong liquor or a few cigarettes saved many lives during these days.
