When the camp had been set up, our next task was to unload the Red Cross ship Lillie Matthiessen, which had arrived in Lübeck with all the supplies we needed for our mission. In Germany, nothing was available, so we had to be completely self-sufficient. For two days we drove shuttle runs between Lübeck and Friedrichsruh. The trucks carried mostly large quantities of fuel and other heavy, bulky items such as replacement engines and tires.
The buses unloaded food, medical supplies, and more, as well as large quantities of Red Cross gift packages. These contained crispbread, smoked pork and sausage, powdered milk, canned goods, chocolate, and more, and were distributed to our passengers during the transports since our cooks were unable to feed so many people under such demanding conditions. It would have taken too long. On some expeditions, we ourselves also had to live on these packages.
