During the day, approximately 4,500 prisoners were transported from Neuengamme in four separate stages. Of the roughly 120 vehicles used, the majority were Danish. Anticipating a total evacuation, the Danes had carefully prepared and gathered all available rolling stock at the border—buses, trucks, and large diesel-powered wagons with trailers.
These now proceeded in massive convoys toward Neuengamme, loaded and beginning their return journey. The Danish operation was excellently led by the head of the relevant department at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The joy among the Norwegians and Danes was, of course, immense. At 8:30 p.m., Captain Ankarkrona and I left Neuengamme as the last ones. With this, the delegation’s stay in Germany was essentially over.
