A few days earlier, 63 Danish policemen had escaped from a prisoner transport, and on April 25, about 40 Danes were reported missing from the camp in Møgelkjær. The Germans were very upset and threatened to halt all transports. They demanded that all Danes in Møgelkjær – 700 men – be transferred to the Frøslev camp for secure confinement behind barbed wire.
At 10:00 a.m., I met at Frøslev camp with the civilian-clad Brigadeführer Schellenberg, Obersturmführer Rennau, and Hauptsturmführer Schnieberg. I tried to explain to them that these escapes might not be so unusual. The Danes were in their own country, and after such a long absence, it would be understandable if homesickness took over. The Germans stressed that the fugitives would immediately become saboteurs operating behind their backs.
