Problem

We transported 21 sick prisoners, 16 lying down and five seated, on the journey from Sachsenhausen to Neuengamme. Upon arrival at Neuengamme, Obersturmführer Anton Thumann demanded that German personnel be allowed to drive the medical transport to the camp hospital for unloading. We refused to hand over the Swedish buses to German drivers. Thumann then threatened to have the sick carried on stretchers along the 1,500 to 2,000-meter route.

After lengthy negotiations and telephone inquiries with the commandant, permission was finally granted for the buses to drive down to the hospital within the camp grounds, with one Swedish driver per bus at a time. Instances of similar displays of power and pettiness were encountered from time to time, often at the most unpredictable moments.
