Count Bernadotte visited the camp and expressed to the Germans a number of requests for improvements in various areas. The work now began to get underway. The pastor held church services, organized quizzes, and other activities. The delegation’s medical personnel participated in healthcare work, while the nurses and social workers visited the different barracks, spoke with the prisoners, and read aloud to them.
Together with the doctors, I planned the medical operations. Since body lice were widespread and cases of typhus occurred, an intensive delousing program was organized. To ensure this important work, a special delousing bureau was established within the camp, with a so-called Lusmästare (Delousing Master) as its head, supported by a few delousing assistants. Under their supervision, literally everything and everyone was systematically treated with DDT powder.
