We arrive at the accommodation site five kilometers from Dachau. We drive into the actual prisoner city, Dachau. One could never have imagined such a place existed. Thousands of gaunt, gray people stand in lines, waiting for food or for us. I speak with an SS officer to arrange the accommodation site and to obtain permission as quickly as possible to collect the people listed on the papers we brought with us. I show the order from Himmler in Berlin, but the SS men find it hard to believe us.
