Payday

In the morning we set up tents in the forest. It’s one of the few forests in this part of Germany. Arrange space for the vehicles—not an easy task. We get scorched food and absurd orders. Later, Folke Bernadotte inspects us in formation and explains what we’ve gotten ourselves into. A hard time lies ahead. In the evening comes payday. Enough to buy about a tin of snuff. I stumble back to the tent in the dark. I am the only officer sleeping in a tent with my men; the others sleep in the castle.
