Punishments

The columns that had transferred prisoners from Neuengamme to other camps returned with much to tell. The sick and emaciated prisoners had appeared completely apathetic and were so thin that fifty of them could fit into a bus that normally held about ten. Among these human wrecks were priests, policemen, high-ranking officials, and young students. Hard bread and water had been seen as a gift from heaven, and when a bus driver shared his ration of biscuits, it caused complete chaos.

On one bus, the drivers had made sandwiches from their own rations and handed them out. The Gestapo men shouted, threatened with forthcoming punishments, and beat the prisoners with rifle butts. Naturally, the drivers reported what happened on the buses. What effect that would have afterward, no one knew. Carrying out these transports felt utterly dreadful.
