Thousands of Women

Got up at 5 AM and woke everyone. The driver of truck 104 was missing, so I took his vehicle while Erik Ringman drove on his own. With my truck and Ringman as driver, the column headed toward Ravensbrück. Thousands of women were lined up on the road outside the camp when we arrived. There was a struggle and jostling as the women tried to get on. Everyone wanted to come immediately.

On each truck bed, we loaded as many as could possibly fit. They stood tightly packed together but seemed to think this was a fantastic way to travel. They were incredibly grateful. These women wanted to give me the whole world and suggested that the youngest and most beautiful among them, a Dutch girl, should sit up front between Ringman and me. Now and then, planes flew over. Fighting was happening not far from us, both in the air and on the ground, from west and east.
