Transfer

Formed up the platoon early and went over orders, handed out cigarettes. Wrote letters, kept the diary, and so on. To make room for the Norwegians and Danes in Neuengamme, the Germans demanded that we help move other prisoners—Russians, Poles, French, and others—to camps including Braunschweig and Bergen-Belsen. A horrendous task! We protested carrying out such transports, but had no choice if there was to be space.

P.M. regarding transports to Braunschweig: prisoners are to be moved from Neuengamme to make room for Scandinavian prisoners. March 27, 1945. Archives of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, 1920 dossier system, HP39 v1619, National Archives.
