In Copenhagen, our passengers were handed directly over to the Malmö ferry. The entire convoy then drove to a large hospital in the city, Blegdam Hospital. It was almost like heaven for us. The vehicles were taken care of by the Danes, and we finally had the chance to wash, shower, and generally freshen up. Then we were treated to a wonderful meal with Danish beer.
The overnight stay took place in large halls with comfortable beds and white sheets. One slept deeply and for a long time. When finally awakened and opening one’s eyes, one saw what appeared to be countless white angels gliding through the room. But when fully awake, one realized they had no wings, and then it became clear that these were the “sygeplejersker” — nurses, as they are called in Danish. They brought breakfast, a tray to each bed with wonderful food. It was fantastic.
When we returned to our vehicles, they had been cleaned and tidied both inside and out. All that remained was to hop in, start them up, and head back toward Germany and the harsh reality.
