Farewell

The entire detachment was to assemble in Odense for the joint departure to Germany. This meant that those of us who were first would spend two nights there. We were stationed in a large, modern school, Munkebjerg School. The vehicles were lined up in the spacious schoolyard, and the personnel were accommodated in various classrooms.

There were beds here, neatly made with white sheets and pillowcases, like in the finest hotel. It was clear that the Danes wanted to do their best for us, and one could not help but compare it to our last night in Sweden, where we had slept in sleeping bags on the bare gymnasium floor.

On the first morning, our meal was served to us in bed by Danish Red Cross nurses. The other meals were taken at various restaurants, and the dinner on the last evening, when we were all gathered, was a true feast provided by the Danes, complete with speeches. We were celebrated by the Danes as heroes, even though we had not yet accomplished anything.
