Digital exhibitionSpeaking Memories

Max Safir

Born in Kielce, Poland in 1925. Died June 9, 2020.

My parents had eight children. At the beginning of the war we were put in the ghetto. My brother and I were taken into force labor. We manufactured ammunition. The rest of our family disappeared in the death camps. No one survived. My brother later became to weak and couldn’t work. He was taken away in front of my eyes. I never saw him again. I was transferred to Birkenau and took part in the death march and ended up in a camp in Austria. We were liberated by the Americans on May 6, 1945. In 1947 I went to Israel where I met my wife. We came to Sweden as my wife’s sister was here. We have two children and four grandchildren.

The stories must be remembered, not only the stories of the survivors, but also of those who died and have no voice.
